Salon Carpet Suggestions
Anyone have any recommendations for carpet in the salon area? Not interested in gluing anything down and not sure about standard home carpeting.
Seems as though standard home carpeting would be difficult to install around hatches etc. because of the heavy backing material.

i took home basic carpet out of my lil F-25, someone did a good job putting it in, i noticed they razor knifed slightly trough the backing to give it just enuf weekness to fold good. i think it will just catch to much grime and sand for the boat. Im thinking about using burber. thinner back, harder carpet and IMO easier to clean, and harder to stain

what color are you looking for? I have some different colors from previous jobs I'd have to check and see size per color but the stuff I use on boats here is made with a thin 3/16" semi dense rubber layer thats fused with the top material. it works well on boats as the bottom holds well enough to prevent the carpet from slipping and prevents moisture/water from settling under it. cutting this material is easy and it wont ravel after a raw cut is made. I'll check and see what colors are left there. the reg. box store in stock stuff all comes with a latex based backing that holds moisture and produces mold easily in an enclosed space.lol and it stinks after 3 weeks
gonna need some of that in grey please sir!!trojanmanXS wrote:what color are you looking for? i'd really like a lighter colour. the maroon/red is just a little too dark and does not blend well w/ the teak. i'd also like to get rid of the padding under it. now, how will you cut around the hatches so it gives it a finished look?

Synthetics are best as natural fibers will eventually rot in the moist marine environment. Nylon and Olefin are the ones that resist sunlight and stains the best. If you have a galley area carpet is not the best choice for that spot because spills are inevitable and stains come with spills.
Most carpet places have remnants available, and when doing something the size of a typical Trojan salon you should be able to find a selection of pieces that will be large enough for your needs without having to pay off the roll cut prices. Professional install is always something to consider too because if you want cutouts for your hatches they should really have bonded edges to avoid the cutouts unraveling.
Nancy and John did a really nice job putting down the carpet in the 32 I am buying from them. They chose a berber and had all the hatch cutouts bonded along the edges. Mayabe she will read this and if she has some pictures will post them.

tv commercial so I'm back. I bought engineered hardwood for the floors in the cabin . its high high gloss santos mahagony from home depot. I got the buddy that make all the new woodwork to match the stain perfect. but sure once its in I'll toss a throw rug right over top of it. its alot easier to replace a throw then redo the floor every time it got something spilled. it is true you have to address the raw edges on carpet. hatch hole normallly are rolled with highbond to conform to the folds and holds up pretty good. Ive done alot of boats here as the compition HATES doing them, its the longest installs with the smallest yardage. but they look great if there done right .
