10 meter mid cabin cockpit upholstery

Post by gardnersf »

Hi all, I am in the process of replacing my cockpit upholstery. I believe it is all original.

Current vinyl is a mottled gray base with Burgundy and Dark grey around the coaming. Burgundy accents on the cushions. Here is a picture showing the general idea

Image

My plan is as follows:

1. Have all new cushions made for the back benches and L-Benches. Current cushions are smaller than the base. New cushions would match the size of the bases, have new foam (At least three inches). Also would remove the trim form the bottom of L-Bench and have cushions go right to the edge.
2. New Cushions would be all white
Replace the L-Bench back vinyl with all white
3. Replace coaming vinyl. keep current format (three rows) but change colors to White-Light Grey - White
4. Replace the vinyl on underside of arch with light grey
5. Replace the helm and companionway seats with custom seats from boatseatsonline.com (Extra wide with flip up bolster). (Canvas shop did not want to reupholster the helm chairs due to complexity. I also want flip up bolsters as I stand most of the time while driving.

I have a local canvas shop doing the cushions and L-Bench

1st question. I think the all white will look good with some grey accents. I will also have light grey piping on the L-Bench and cushions) - Has anyone seen a 10 meter with all white? How did it look in person?

2nd question. Has anyone used boatseatsonline? They are basically Scotties Canavs in North Ft. Meyers. It is hard to find teh double hel style.

Any other thoughts?

I have changed all my seats and cusions to egg white color. And also the same color for backing, sides and fronts of the L-bench, the fridge bench and side cusions. I will put in pics a little later on. (in April)

I have seen the boat with all white, though with the accenting colors like from the factory. It looks GREAT! Very updated but still maintaining the original look.

Mine was all blotchy from age and no amount of cleaning would make it look good. It was in pretty good shape it just looked like hell.

I went to Home Depot and used trim paint for wood/vinyl and it looks fantastic and has held up just fine after two years. I used a foam pad and with the textured surface it came out great.

Just a thought, replacing that vinyl will be a little bit of work. Can you do me a favor? Can you send me some pics of the transom insert piece? My boat is missing mine and I've given up trying to find one.

thanks

I hate that dumb transom insert piece.

I need to replace my back benches, they are rotted. What would be a good material for that? I was thinking starboard, but I know there are other options.

I had priced doing all that work and found it really high. I would think I could get new helm seats for less than the cost to recover, but I've never spent much time looking into it.

Good luck.

Hi Scott,

I have been collecting 10 meter pix for years PM me with your e-mail address and I'll send them along.

Boy, I'd think TWICE about killing the helm/companionway seats.

They are COMFORTABLE and BIG and the storage underneath cannot be beat. What about saving the "boxes" lay down some new formica and put some custom seating on top?

Also, that wood footrest can be raised or lowered to work best for you . Same could be done with the actual seats mounted on the boxes.

While you are in there, why not kill one of the L-Bench seats and replace it with a wetbar? You gain a second fridge/icemaker, a sink, a countertop storahe on top (lid) and bottob cabinet and a pull out drawer.

I'd use white as a trim, not as the primary color as it will show more dirt and stains.

Please keep us apprised with LOTS of pix.

I'm trying to find some that are not as "loud" as the origional colors. White with blue piping etc. Thinking about making all my pads about one third the origional size. Going for that simple, traditional sport fish look . not sure how im doing the seats. Love the helm seats but am dreading to quote to recover them! Scott, if you dont mind me asking Do you have a budget number on doing the vinyl? I keep trying to get to a local upolstry shop to get some numbers but havent had time. I think my interior upolstry and exterior vinyl are going to be worse the the engine rebuilds! Just trying to put together a budget for the "unknowns"

I like your Idea for the color pattern. I think the white with grey would look great.

RWS,

I don't have the high sats with footrests like you do. I am keeping the nice fiberglass boxes and just replacing the seats on top. I can get new seats that are very similar to the existing ones plus have a flip up bolster for $600 apiece. They make them custom and I can add color accents if I want.

If I don't go with white, I'm not sure what color I would do. Maybe the light grey?

I need to get the camera out and take some pictures. I have most of the coaming pads torn down.

I like the wet bar idea but shipping from Chicago to RI may be a little pricey.

I called them today. Their site had just crashed and they didn't know why. I called the guy in Chicago about the wetbar. he is going to get a shipping quote. It may not be too bad as it would go as freight. Now I just need to be sure I want to go that direction. :)
