Another dumb one here . My son is currently still in high school and goes to auto tech school as well. What I gather is the kid is a natural and has shown a real knack for this and the school allows the students to bring in their own projects , vehicles ect and the teacher will oversee the repairs and replacement. If I were to give him the tranny to rebuild where would I look for as well as what am I looking for to purchase ? do they a complete rebuild kit available?

have tried googling "velvet drive rebuild kit"?
theres like a million references to rebuild kits and all kinds of info on the transmission rebuild. plenty of places to purchase parts

found a tag in my shop vac yesterday that belongs to my velvet drive. carefully restored it today and it doesnt have any of those numbers on it. guess i got sum searching to do

most likely says 10-17 ( that would be a 71 series ) or a 10-18 ( 72 series )

Yeppers 10-17-004 looking it up now. Some reveiws are saying that the 71 series was a little better than the 72. kinda neat I was able to restore this tag. It was unreadable, under 3 layers of paint and thin rust. Brought her back to about 95% and clear coated it

The 71 and 72 are almost the same . The 72 is made to take more horse power , they will inter change . the only real difference outside is the 72 is just under a inch longer .

ok i just read something about 1 plate vrs 2 in the 71 and plastic vrs steel. amazing how reading alot different things at once will blog your mind.

some have fiber clutch plates and some have bronze plates . both work well . I all ways used the bronze when over hauling them . The 72 has more plates BTW but are the same part ( same over haul kit )

And don't worry about the 71 , its rated for 300 hp at 4000 rpm . ( from the graft.) Good Gear.

cool, the lay out looks like a simple build. my harley davidson 75 built-in tranny looks like it was harder to rebuild than this, but that is always easier said than done

It simple as far as trans go . its like a 1 speed automatic.

thats what it looks like to me LOL. sweet saves me $. my linkage is broken and case is severly rusted, guess ill see after its blasted and cleaned up
