The starboard is to help make it easier to winch the boat up the trailer,, but can cause it to slide off the trailer on any kind of incline--ie a boat ramp. It Is customary to unhook the winch and attch a line to a bow cleat and them back her down the ramp.

A few years ago on a rainy saturday AM, I saw a guy unhook the saftey chain on a 29ft center console and hand a dock line to his buddy on the ramp. He hopped in his truck and started to back down the ramp. About 12' before the water, the boat slid off the trailer onto the concrete ramp, ripping the dock line from the other guys hand. When it hit, it snapped off the skeg of one of his out-boards and cracked the other one into pieces all the way up the power head. Bunkboards were starboard type material and with the moisture from highway spray. So, I'd say taking the safety chain off is not a good practice until the boat is over the water.

I had a 19' wellcraft cuddy that me and a friend were pulling at a launch ramp and he could not get the safety chain connected, normally I would always make sure it was connected but I was in the boat and told him to just pull me up the ramp because it was not to steep. Well part way up the ramp the locking mechanism on the winch broke and the boat launched off the trailer onto the ramp and then slid in the water. I yelled for him to back down the ramp and in minutes we had the boat back on the trailer with the safety chain hooked up this time and pulled the boat, It all happened so fast it kind of looked like we did it that way all the time. lucky there was only slight damage but I would never launch or pull a boat with out the safety chain attached, my trailer was a roller.

Not exactly Starboard but removed the carpet and put these on the trailer For my 16ft center console. It slides off as if it had rollers. I keep the winch and safety chain on until im all the way down the ramp. These screw into the bunks from the side so you dont have to worry about gouging the hull on a screwhead.
