where does the packing go?

where does the packing go?

i think i have the ones that are supposed to drip. when we bought the boat back in may the starboard one dripped the port side one did not. i figured today i would take them apart to see whats what. i couldnt see any packing. where does it go? here are a few shots of what i have.

you can also see all that oil has been cleaned up and the bilgecoat is finished.

Check or replace the hose connecting the stuffing box to the through the hull. Mine had deep cracks in them and if failure guess what comes to the boat. :(

i was thinking about that also. i will be taking that hose off to inspect thanks.

hey thanks for that link. the packing goes into the nut. i have the nuts off. i can dig out the old packing but the nut has to be on the shaft to put the new packing in?.

Yes, insert the packing into the nut when it is on the shaft. You won't be able to insert the shaft into a nut that has new packing in it without damaging the packing in the process.
She was a 1969 36 ft wooden beauty with big blue 440s that we'll miss forever.

By the way since we have the same boat - you are correct that they are supposed to drip - about 10 drips per 60 seconds - I can check the manual if you would like.

yes thats what i heard also. i cleaned up the nut and took out the old packing from the port side one that wasnt dripping. does that look right? only 3 loops of packing is all thats needed? i still have to get the flange off the starboard side and do the same thing. also inspect or i guess replace the rubber. the hose clamps are rusted and it just doesnt look good. damn this project is getting expensive.

thats what i need. ill borrow a puller from auto zone next time go up to the marina. got a few days of engine work at home to do the next couple days. then friday i have a job. first one since middle jan. (self employed construction) business has been bad so far this year.
