Correct thermostats:

Marine engine for use in fresh water, the operating temperature can range between 150° F to 190° F. For an engine for use in salt water, it is necessary that the temperature be restricted to no higher than 140° F since above this temperature salt starts to crystallize and can therefore corrode the interior of the engine.

the problems start just above 160 in salt thats why a 140 deg stat is used . the salt and minerals start plug up things above that temp . . Of course salt will start doing damage at any time its in the engine .

and i have been looking for a while for them. the 140's are hard to come by. but 142's are available.

142 would be fine ,really anything from 140-145 deg. would be ok

Above statements are true for raw water cooled engines not jacket water cooled.

Correct should have added that but was in a hurry . salt water engine should be kept below 160 , anything above is not good . a 140 stat should keep you below . if not there maybe other issues
