Restoration after galley fire

Post by poppasmirf »

The fire was confined to about a 3' x 3' area in the galley. I've removed the old galley and bulkhead between the salon and aft stateroom now. This weekend I got the hot water heater and decking under it out as well and have exposed this area down to the hull. This area, directly below the fire, has some delamination in the fiberglass. My neighbour is a marine surveyor, a rather negative one in my opinion, and told me not to waste my time restoring my boat. He said that unless the fiberglass was made with a fire retardant additive that I would have to cut out the entire section of the hull. I did a search and believe that Uniflite and Trojan were using a fire retardant in their fiberglass. Can anybody confirm this for me?
Thanks,
Doug

Don't know, but if there is delamination of the hull, it must be fixed. You should be able to repair it with the West system, but it cold be a structural issue (or insurance issue) moving forward.

If you got the boat cheap (or free?), why not give it a shot?

I'm sure you'll get good advice here if you post a few pics.

I don't believe Trojan was using a fire retardant in their fiberglass . But that has noting to do with the repair . The fiber glass is damage or it is not damaged . Being retardant has nothing to do with the repairs needed .
