helm station leaking

helm station leaking
my 78 f32 inside helm station is leaking fluid it appears from a seal on the end where the wheel is attached. i believe its the syten system. anybody have suggestions on how to stop this or purchase another seal. any thoughts. thanks

Yup - that would be your Syten power steering pump. Parts no longer available (according to Teleflex - I have asked about stuff for my '79 F32), so if it is the seal around the steering shaft you have a bit of a problem... This is what Teleflex recommends replacing my old system with :
* HH5271, Helm pumps, 2 ea (one per station)
* HA5418, adapter kit, 2 ea
* HT5097, nylon tubing, 1 ea (75' cut to fit tube)
* HC5314, Steering Cylinder, 1 ea
* HF5502, second station fitting kit, 1 ea
* HA5430, Oil, 4 ea

If the leak is around the little fill cap, you could try to tighten it a bit, but don't remove it !!! I believe the way this system is plumbed (assuming you have flybridge with dual station) the lower station just 'in line' with the upper station controls. If you pull the plug all the fluid 'above you' in the system is going to try to drain.
If you do have to pull the plug, make sure you have something to catch all that fluid (other than your carpet), and/or have a cork or something ready to fill the hole as soon as you get the plug out.
Alternatively you could try to partially drain the system by disconnecting one of the hoses at the power steering cylinder, where you might be able to manage the flow better.

I am scared to! I got the info when I was researching options to fix a slight leak at the steering cylinder, that has been there for 8 years (so likely not an imminent failure). I also have a few other projects I am debating about (engines are getting a bit tired, head is the original recirculating system with separate holding tank, a few stress cracks around stanchion bases), so when I saw the parts list I expected big bucks and didn't take it any further (yet).
The manufacturer gave me the info on what I needed, but pricing would depend on whatever dealer you can get it from. Taking a quick look now at Mermaid Marine (Canadian company on the east coast) they price the helm pumps just over $500 each, and the steering cylinder around $400.
Add to that the adapter kit, about 150' of tubing, plus the other stuff... Probably pushing $1500 - 2 grand for parts. US Pricing is probably cheaper (heck - they make the hydraulic steering systems in Canada, so it only makes sense that you can buy them cheaper in a different country, right?)
