Troubleshooting Gauges

Post by The Dog House »

Some of the gauges on my boat are not working. Is there a way to use a multi-meter to figure out if the gauge is broken or the gauge is not getting a signal from the sending unit? Thanks for any suggestions you can offer.

Which guages are not working? You should have 12 v to all guages when the ignition switch is on. You will also ahve a sending unit wire to the Oil/temp and fuel guages. You can ground the sending unit wire and the guage should read 100% with the ignition switch on. If you have 12 volts and the guage dosen`t move its the guage. I usually ground at the sending unit to check wiring back to the guage. If it dosent move i then ground at the guage to confirm wire to the sending unit. Hope this helps

This PDF might help. The site itself also has short manuals on gauges and senders, and how they work. Troubleshooting will apply to your gauges as well not just Faria. The manual has resistance values and a troubleshooting flow chart that takes you step by step through a methodical testing proceedure:
