Not Trojan but interesting

Post by davidsmith »

I have a friend with a 38 ft Regal with 454 power. Been having trouble with the port engine valves rattling when he ran over 2400 rpm. Anything under 2400 rpm no problems. Oil change was no help. Adjusted valves was no help. Pulled all lifters and inspected them for wear and found no problems. I thought the oil pickup might be stoped up so I pulled the engine and v-drive. Pulled the oil pan and found the oil pickup screen assembly had broken off the pickup tube causing the oil pickup to be about 2 inches higher than normal. When he got on plane the oil would shift to the front of the pan lowering it below the pick up. Welded the screen back on the tube and reinstalled the engine. Will test run tomorrow and report back if anyone is interested.

Good find, I'll bet that was his problem. Good luck with the test ride

Well after much work putting the engine back together got the engine started and adjusted the valves. Ran it for about 45 minutes at the dock and shut it down to check the fluids and found the oil milky. I had to pull the starboard exhaust manifold back a couple inches to remove the valve cover and found water sitting one of the exhaust ports. So we either have a cracked manifold or riser. The saga continues.

Ouch.

Just noticed you're on Lake Murray. I have friends who live on the lake. Where are you located? Do you have your F36 on the lake?

Yes Rossjo the F-36 is on Lake Murray at my house right across from the old Lake Murray Marina. They have torn it down and are rebuilding it with apartments. Will still have a restaurant run by Libertys Tap Room from what I hear.

Finally got back to work on the engine. Removed the intake and found a piece of old gasket material left on the intake. Cleaned intake gasket surfaces and reinstalled. Engine runs perfect now with no lifter rattle and no water in the oil.. 4400 rpm wot. Careless cleaning can ruin your day.
