after you remove the old name, how do you get the rest off

no worries here. Thinner is the cheapest and will remove the glue, move around, dont stay in one spot a long time, If you have not done it yet, use a heat gun on low and most glue will stay on the sticker. If your oxidation is bad and light water sanding isnt going well. you can use 800 grit to knock it down fast. Step up to 1200 or 1500 to kill sand scratches. Wipe clean and buff with compound using a real buffer, not a cheap orbital buffer, Borrow an electric grinder and put a white whool buffing pad on it. You will need the high tork no matter what you decide to do. Dont be afraid to use com0pound, If your dry buffing you can get to hot and cause more damage, have any pics of what your working on?

There is a a "proper way to rename a boat". It insures Posidon and Neptune do not get angry and do bad things to the boat, doesn't get the lettering off though.
