Surveyor recommendation needed for upper Chesapeake bay
I am about 90% sure (that's to say me and the seller are within 10% on the price) that I'll need a surveyor for a tricab near the top of the Chesapeake. Any references would be appreciated.
Since I'm a cash buyer and want to move things along quickly if we come to agreement, I just wanted to get a head start. Thanks, Perry

Since I wanted to get something scheduled for next week, I went to the SAMS website and picked, then read up on and interviewed:

I cannot recommend this guy. We got into an argument as to whether the wood in the stingers contributed to their strength or not ( he said NOT), and he basically threatened to leave in the middle of the survey -- picked-up his clipboard and started to leave and everything. If it wasn't a 5 hr. round trip to the boat and a day of vacation for me, I'd have let him. I had to point out to him that there was a leak between the thru-hull backing plate for the port underwater exhaust and the hull itself. I also do not believe he took any pictures of the vessel -- the last surveyor I used provided me with a disk of 405 pictures before I left the area. He did not use a moisture meter on anything -- good thing I brought my own! Not totally worthless, but not the stellar job I received from Monak Marine in Ohio. Not something I enjoy beating him up on, but he had throat cancer a few years ago, and it is really hard to understand his speech. Somehow, it seemed better on the cell phone than in person.

Another vote for Butch! Met him years ago when I was trying to decide what to do with my boat. He was in the process of becoming a surveyor and stopped by the shop and gave me some tips. He never did an actual survey for me but he's a great guy and very sharp.

Can't say I know of Butch's survey work but he does knows Trojans and I've seen his boat up close and personal, he invited us on to check it out in St. Michaels a few years back. Its' absolutely immaculate!
As a matter of fact, John Leeds, from Marine Tech, was also on the boat with us and commented on what a clean vessel he has.
