Another boating tragedy.
Boat capsizes in NY harbor.......a 34 foot boat capsized and sunk while out watching fire works. Police are investigating the cause.........boat had 27 people on board. 3 kids drowned.......I think the cause is pretty obvious. Too bad 3 kids died due to somebody's lack of safety concern.......doubt if there were 27 life jackets aboard a 34 footer.........another senseless tragedy.........John

Sad - 27 people on a 34' boat is a bit much. Weather Channel said there was some weather issue, but that's too many people.
Pretty calm night watching fireworks near the Yorktown last night - only saw the authorities chasing one boat after the show was over.

We were in the area when this happened, about 5 miles away. We heard the radio call and the screams. Because of our AIS system the Coast Guard called us by cell phone and asked to keep a look out and monitor the radio. What a waste. Happened about 9-9:30 pm.

sad... Captian claims a wake wave spun him around in the dark (witness from another vessel says its true), He also claims there was over 27 vest aboard, yet no one was wearing one. This story of the silverton just recently bought by the capt. will get deeper. This guy is in trouble and deserves to be IMO. Capt didnt check the cabin? Capt is the last one off, these kids they pulled from the cabin could have been saved...My heart goes out!

When you are overloaded, the boat will ride very different. Kind of like too much or too little trim tab. The cause was the overloading. The spinning on the wake wave - if it really happened - and following capsize were direct results of the overloading. It's the captain's fault 100%, not the wake wave's fault, and not the fault of whoever created it. I just hope accountability gets laid on the right set of shoulders here.jefflaw35 wrote:sad... Mini-rant : Any time you leave the dock you are putting the lives of yourself, your crew, and your guests at risk. If you don't know what you are doing, you shouldn't be on the water. That's why proper boating education, via things like the Power Squadron and paying attention to the 'old guys' on this forum, are important.

Being not far from this incident, and owning the exact year, make and model boat involved I have to say, the fact that they put 27 people on board is what I feel directly caused this accident. I had 12 on mine the other night (never left the slip) and it was a bit cramped. Over doubling that number is neglegent.
The owner of the boat was not the captain. I'm thinking the new owner, allowed this other gentleman to pilot the boat due to his inexperience?
This boat should have never left the dock with that many people on board. It's truly sad, and no rogue wave/wake is to blame.

When I have 3 people on my fly bridge my boat handles very different and feels somewhat top heavy. I'm think there were some on the bridge and the wave may have upset the boat jostling people to one side and there she goes....right on over........It's hard for me to imagine anyone would think 27 people on a 34 footer was ok........John
