Recent Projects

Post by Commissionpoint »

I haven't posted in awhile due to being either at work or on the water constantly for a couple months. I did want to drop in and say hi and tell you all a little about what I have been up to on the Trojan though.

Right after taking delivery on it I had it hauled locally and did some cosmetic work and some other things I wanted to take care of right away and not leave until either the fall or next spring. That included changing transom lettering, having some repair work done on some trim on the swim platform where it had been backed into something, and having the platform itself removed and rebedded/installed as there was some hinky hardware on some of the brackets, and one of the brackets themselves had a crack so we fabbed up an identical one here and replaced it too.

Then there was the discovery of some old repair work on the Stbd. side forward of the dinette area where it looks like an old impact was patched. My buddy who has been rebuilding/restoring fiberglass boats for 35 years started sputtering and practically foaming at the mouth when he saw how the repair was handled. He implored me to let him in there and do it properly insisting that he would only bill me materials and that it would take him 10 days to do it. So apart came the interior, and the old repair. A new repair was made, and done properly this time and now all that had to be done was match the gelcoat and put the interior back together. The interior went fine, like a jigsaw puzzle. The gelcoat match was a bit more difficult. The factory didn't match due to oxidation, the second choice was close but still not right, on the third try we nailed it. Sea Ray Arctic White. Apparently thier color perfectly matches 35 year old Trojan. So well, in fact that I can't see the repair, and I have excellent eyesight.

Other things I have done after getting it back in the water have been replace the Onan MCCK fuel pump. I used a Facet cannister type, which had the same specs as the one I pulled off of it, but is going to be much more reliable. I believe that this is the style Onan themselves switched to at some point either during or after Spec J production. The genny is running excellent now, and I plan to take a day off next week to go out and use it to make a roast duck dinner on the islands here.

I disassembled the bilge blower motors, replaced the brushes, and lubed them well. They are now very quiet and run great. I am going to upgrade all of the hoses for them this fall including the vent in the head. I am looking to use one of the TigerFlex products for this job, dunno which spec yet, have to do some more research.

I replaced the house side batteries with 3 new group 31's. That was more of a choice than a requirement. There were 3 group 29's in there, but the newest one was marked 2009, so I just decided to replace them. There is an inverter on board, and I have no idea how much abuse the old batteries had taken, so I just thought it best to start fresh on that account.

Minor things I have done have been bought a sleeper sofa for the Port side salon. Bought a 32 ingh HDTV for the shelf forward of the dinette. Put my PS3 on board. Bought a vacuum cleaner for it. Replaced the shower curtain(s). Installed trumpet horns, and added an auto switch to the aft bilge pump.

I'll post some pics in the coming weeks of where I am at with her.

Regards to all.

Hi Michael - that's all sounds very familiar to me, looks like we are doing same works 1000 of miles distance :D

The hull works (osmosis) will start when winterized.

Our old gen will be throw away, same to the 36 year old diesel heater.
Our bilge blower motors pops the fuse after 1 minute. New batteries already moved in.

Our inverter sometimes plays any on/off off/off/on ... melody ?!? Replace !

Auto switch for bilge pumps will be installed in to 2 weeks.
So we're speaking 'trojanish' fluently

Yes. My days are like this since 25 May.

Wake up on Trojan. Make food. Tinker. Go to work. Go back to Trojan. Eat more food. Tinker. Sleep. Rinse and repeat.

I am closing in on my first hundred operation hours of the season.

Next year is air conditioning, wireless broadband, and satelite television. Then I won't have to be gone from the internet for so long.
