11 meter steering cylinder

Post by smiller192 »

While running my boat this past weekend I noticed the steering getting sloppy I added fluid and repressurized to get back to the dock. Looked for my leak and the steering cylinder was the culprit. Here is my problem: I had to fly home that evening and was sure the model number was in my documentation (at home). The previous owner ha a comprehensive list of every part on the boat. He must not have ever touched the steering cylinder, because it was not listed. I have the original Hynautic documentation from Trojan. I am sure it is a Hynautic and probably either a K1 or K2. Has anyone rebuilt their steering cylinder on an 11 meter? Which model was it? I really don't want to buy them both for my next trip to my boat. Any help would really be appreciated.

I did as well but it twas the the pump at the helm, not the cylinder that connects to the tiller arms. I think Scott did the same, I got the idea from him :)

If you get leaks either at the wheel or just behind it, the rebuild kit will take care of that. I haven't see a rebuilt kit for the cylinder itself though but probably a good thing to source for any of us with Hynautic installs.

hynautic steering cylinder

Post by smiller192 »

Just a followup from my initial post, finally got back down to my boat. The 11 meter (and the 10 meter from what I can tell) uses the Hynautic K1 cylinder. The rebuild kit is a model KS-11. It is readily available from TELEFLEX. I paid $32.00 for the kit from Lewis Marine supply in Ft Lauderdale. It took about 1 hour to replace the seals and reinstall the unit. if anyone is interested in replacing the cylinder rather than rebuilding, the Hynautic K1 is replaced by the Seastar HC5369. The id tag was long gone from my cylinder, I finally identified it by measurement from the original literature. My boat is an 1985 and it was dripping pretty good. The seals were hard and the wiper had disintergrated from both ends.
