Sorry to hear about your bad luck Mike.

Hope it didn't turn your wife off to boating.

Most of us become very ANAL about our lines and how we're tied up. Double and triple checking isn't unusual.

On the bright side, no serious damage was done and you have some valuable experience which will translate into being better able to see problems looming in the future and avert them.

Also, anyone who hasn't been aground just hasn't been boating.

When I first got my F-32 one of my engines was running hot at higher rpm, the faster I went the warmer it got. When I slowed down it cooled down. When I hauled the boat for bottom paint I found the raw water pick-up screen for that engine was pushed in and pretty much closed off obviously from the previous owner running aground at some time. I pryed the grates apart and opened them up and the problem was solved. Since then I watch my exhaust water very closely.

About the wife being involved, I ask my wife if she would drive the boat while I tinker and she has a blast. Sometimes instead of tinkering I will go into the v-birth and read or take a nap, this lets her be in complete control. I will admit I get a little nervous sometimes but with a little instruction to stay between the bouys and watch for junk in the water she does as good as anyone. Sometimes I even let her choose where we go for the weekend and let her be the captain. This has worked so well that she wanted to take an eight week coast guard coarse which we did and both past just fine. For the most part, I cast off the lines and she takes the boat out but she still has me bring it to dock. She now loves boating and even helps work on it. That comes in handy when it's time to sand and varnish the railing.....while I go down and tinker....

By all means let the wife take a LONG turn at the wheel and be in charge. On our canal trip my wife was co-captain (none of this first mate crap for her) and did a better job of keeping an eye out for hazards, etc. than me. She handles lines, etc and knows how to use the VHF, all thanks to going in and out of 56 locks on the canal! She still has a big phobia about docking, but we'll work on this.

Sorry your trip got messed up! I'll bet the strainers are messed up, and also look at imprellers on the water pumps. I'd also kick the crap out of the mechanic who signed off on the job! They should help you out without making you wait 3 freakin weeks! It's their fault you got in trouble in the first place!

Trying to make the trip durng the dark....well, that one goes into you memory bank as "what not to do next time......" we all have a lot of those!
