Rotation problem or not? Last minute surprise on our motor!

Post by classicf25 »

Just when we thought we were doing great and almost on schedule the mechanic informs us the reman block he has just about finished putting together is a standard rotation, we were told it was reverse before. Will this affect the performance? The place we purchased the block from is willing to swap out the prop we have and the starter. Aapparently our Borg Werner 1:1 can go either way. I have been told that it will be fine and will not affect anything but then others say it will greatly affect performance and handling? Any advice greatly appreciated as we have a vacation planned around using the boat this week! We were supposed to be on the water Wednesday and the mechanic say's he can still make that happen... Getting kind of scary now.

It will pull the opposet direction when backing up other then that not much difference . I would perfer the standard rotaion myself.

The Borg Warner 1:1 can work both ways BUT ! You MUST rotate the pump on the Borg Warner for it to work on the opposite rotation

According to Bob at Beacon Trojan used reverse rotation in single ingine installations. He says they perform better. IMO I agree with Paul side thrust would just be reverse. But what do I know.

I feel a lot better already! It seemed to me that it should not make a huge difference. The shaft will just turn different for the most part, the rudder appears to be in the center on the boat as well... I wonder why performance would be enhanced with reverse rotation? After all we have gone through to get this close to the water and have this issue arise at the last minute was a little troublesome to say the least. I could not even discuss this any further with my mechanic when he told me, I wasn't sure what to do or what I wqs about to say to my mechanic, might not have been good! I rushed home to get online because I know I will get the best advice here-Thanks!

i'm curious, who was supposed to keep up with the rotation? is this the mechanics snafu or the company that the block came from?

Ask your mechanic to take a look at your shaft log and the direction the nut tightens. Some apps were standard or reverse thread depending on shaft rotation to help prevent the shaft from backing the nut off. Didn't catch the engine app but if just a long block, along with the stater and pump noted above, you may have to worry about the distributor as well. Your mechanic should be pointing out all these possibilities ahead of time rather than as he goes along so you don't keep getting surprised during the process 'cause that usually means more $$.

single engine boats

Post by 32pacemaker »

single engine boats have the engine offset to the port side 1-2 inches to make them steer straight, if you look at your engine mounts the engine should be closer to the port stringer (righthand turning engine) also on the distributor depending on gear or chain drive cam and direction of the gear helex some distributors need thrust washers.

I have done the swap and seen it done never a issue , Never notice a offset as the shaft always came out centered to the keel .
