10 meter anchor locker

Post by koviak »

Out today and dropped anchor to relax only to find water inside the locker.
I removed the base board in the locker to find it totaly full, used a bucket to empty out. Thought these drained into the bilge, I mean it was full.
If no drain has any one drilled the hull and installed a drain? Will dig into it more this week.

There is a drain hole in the bottom of the locket that drains directly overboard.

You will find he opening directly on the centerline, at the base of the anchor locker

About 5/16" or 3/8"

Yours is probably stopped up with debris.

Remove all your rode & chain and get r cleaned out.

When I wash the deck I will from time to time simply drop the hose into mine just to flush the small stuff out.

Thought the same, assuming it filled from rain water and boat washings.

I've seen the small hole right in the hull but haven't actually seen the drain itself.

I assume that's under the shelf where the anchor sits?

Will tackle this during the week. Never seen a hole thru the bow for draining. Maybe painted over thru the years.

approach it from the underside

I'd use a wire coat hangar to break up the muck.

My '90 mid cabin had no drain hole. So drilled a 3/8" hole on each side, epoxied the raw glass and but ss clam shells over them angled slightly astern.

I also took out the wood shelf for more fall of the anchor rode.

I have one hole basically under the pulpit, right on the "V" part of the hull if I recall.

Assuming this is at the bottom of locker. Will need to clear this as I just received a new windlass for my b-day on tuesday. Lewmar 1000 with a free 22lb. Delta anchor. Any one else using this brand?

I am running the Lewmar FF 600 or 700.

this is a freefall unit with a clutch

After the initial install I found it was mounted too far forward, thus allowing the chain & rode to "pile up" under the opening.

I have since moved it a bit aft and spread the load out with the use of a Starboard base.

Eventually after I rebuild my bow pulpit (waiting for Bob CT to do his first and relieve my own anxiety about tackling this project) I will move it once again back as far as possible and add a manual switch and coiled water hose.

It should be noted that I am using 30' of chain.

The farther aft you go the better it will feed when raising the anchor.

Okay I cleaned out the anchor locker and did locate a drain hole in the bottom center. Has been painted over thru the years. Removed the mirror on forward bulkhead and cut in a 8"x 12" access hatch. Also removed hatch on deck and cut out the molded in vee notch that would support a anchor. This is all flush with deck now, will be using 3/4" starboard to make a cover for locker top. Will be using 3/4" as a backer plate also. RWS I took your advise on mounting back as far as possible, back of windlass will be on deck at bulkhead. Will try to get some pics as I go.

better make that access hole from the inside a watertight type piece of hardware.

When I remove my bow pulpit (still waiting for Bob CT to do his first) I intend to move the windlass back a few more inches, however IO WILL NOT give up the rode storage access from the top as I have seen some owners do.

PHOTOS PLEASE !
