water intake question

Thought I would ask you guys about something I have been looking at on my boat. As you can see in the pictures someone apparently added another water pickup just ahead of the main water intake strainer for engine cooling system. The pictures / angles may be a bit misleading but the added water pickup strainer is 12 inches ahead of the engine cooling water intake. It is slightly off center of the main cooling water intake. Seems to me that this one would interfere or disrupt the water flow needed to the engine cooling water intake. This added intake strainer also is not connected or going to anything. It is just stubbed up through the hull with a cut off valve on top.

i'm going to try to answer this one. but, beware, my morning pain meds are kicking in, so, if i ramble, maybe one of the other guys can pick up the ball and make more sense of it. first, are you talking about the small scoop intake? second, this is not attached to anything, just sealed up?
the idea behind the scoop is to increase water flow into the engines when underway. the water actually gets forced into the little slots and causes a vacuum effect when underway. that's why, at the dock, the engines can run a bit warm as there is no forced 'water flow' into the scoops. this scoop might have been for a marine a/c unit. the other thru hull that i'm seeing is for what? this is the round intake with out a scoop. overboard discharge for the head? what kind of vessel are we talking about too.
hope that makes sense. guys, feel free to correct if necessary.

I wouldn't take a chance on disrupting the water flow to the engine. From what I see you have a few options. 1) remove the intake and fill the hole in. 2) remove the clamshell scoop and put a mushroom thru hull in to stop the water flow disruption. Did you have an overheating problem before? Seeing how the bottom is stripped down I would remove the fitting and fill the hole in. Hope this helps somewhat.

allen, i can't tell from the pic. is the smaller scoop directly in front of the engine pick up?

Yes it is and the smaller scoop doesn't go to anything.

Yes it is and the smaller scoop doesn't go to anything.

okay, i like your idea of either the mushroom or just closing it off altogether.

Thanks for the responses. Guess I should have advised that the boat is a 1978 F 26. Anyway I bought the boat in January and have been renovating. Never ran it on the lake, just hose. Engine runs great and engine/water temp are runing within proper range. The big round through hull without scoop did go with toilet waste discharge. I was leaning toward completely removing the smaller intake scoop that did not go to anything unless someone with a similiar set up advised there would be no problem with the smaller scoop disrupting water to engine water intake scoop.
