I have read some postings about replacing the original galvanized fuel tanks which mentioned removing the rear deck in one piece, after removing the ladder to the upper bridge. I have one low spot (spongy) on the port aft most corner of the deck and many of the original teak plugs covering the screws have popped out. The surface needs much sanding and serious refinishing.
Plan A:
My thought is to remove the whole deck and refinish it out of the boat. If possible. This may also give me more access to the supports to the deck to find the source of the low spot in the deck.
Plan B:
I have thought of using a composite wood decking material to make a complete new and maintenance free surface, using the original pull out deck as the template. Any thoughts or tips?
Also... What is the purpose of the composite board (falling apart) under the teak decking? Sound deadening, waterproofing?
I replaced my aft deck with 3/4 x 3" non finished T&G Teak, it cost around $425.00 for 120 SF of material . I removed any support the was in need of replacing, laid down on the frame ½ pt ply and attached it with ss screws. This allowed me to attach the thong and grove to the ply with ss wood flooring nails. On the bottom of each grove I laid a bead of silicon to make a water tight seal. The hatch’s were made using the same wood however, i used 2x2 alu angle to hold together the wood in to the frame that I removed from the old hatch’s. You could not ask for a better floor than real teak instead of the fake teak ply that was used, I just oil it once or twice a season. Laying it out so that everything is symmetrical is a task but well worth it. With it all said and done I do believe that I added around 200lb to the aft of the boat.
Plasteak, is some nice stuff, However, to do my deck in Plasteak it would have cost me upwards of $4000.00 + . And if you do not do the templet correct, you eat it.
