FINALLY... after 2 failed surveys, bought a new boat

Post by Peter »

As some of the longer term members of the forum may recall, this last spring I sold my Trojan F 36 which we've had for the last 10 years. ( It was a great boat,I hope the new owners are enjoying her as much as me and my family did).In the meantime my wife and I have been searching for a replacement since last winter. Our plans initially were to try to purchase a single diesel trawler, but over the summer our thinking has evolved.
This summer was a summer of disappointment.First we put a deposit ($3,000) on an older 40 foot Luhrs which had supposedly been completely redone. It failed the survey ( leaking fuel tank). It was a private deal, and so far the dick-head owner has not refunded my 3 grand ( Grrrr... He's in New York,I'm in Ohio...may have to make a road trip.... ).Then after more months of searching we identified a 40 foot Viking which we were able to come to terms on.It also failed the survey...stringers completely gone.
Including paying for the surveys, thats almost 5 grand and not even a friggin boat ride. :?

Anyway finally success.
Money talks, got a GREAT deal ( seller really in dire straights...yes I feel guilty but I'll get over it 8) )

What a relief....This boat looks new, rides really nice, and except sucking fuel like theres no tomorrow, is awesome ( in my humble opinion). 11 hours on the generator!!

Here she is.

Nice boat. I like some of the improvements made from just a few years prior; a big pain was the placement of the 8D batteries before  Can't recall the range of years or serial numbers affected but check to ensure the heat exchanger seals are the newer upgraded kind. Merc had a campain on those; the coolant leaks out over the winter; required changing the material used in making the seals. Perfectly fine in the summer. You can probably Google the numbers, model, and "heat exchanger seal leaks" and get more info or just supply the numbers to a Merc dealer to find out for sure.

MAZEL TOV on your new purchase. she's beautiful!! regal is a great company all around. quality product and they stand behind everything they build. i once had a 30 hr layover in orlando and called the factory to see if i could go on a tour. i explained that i was a flight crew member and that i had to line up a cab to take me to the factory. they immediately let it be known that would not be necessary. in 30 minutes i had a company rep at my hotel ready to drive me over to look things over. amazing. i really enjoyed the tour and if any of you are in the orlando area and just want a really personal experience boat building wise, take the tour. they are proud of the product they build and it shows.
again, MAZEL TOV. may she be a safe haven for you and your family and may she ALWAYS bring you home.

Thanks for the support and offer of help. Not really sure what I want to do as far as the deposit is concerned. The issue boiled down to a disagreement on the survey.Surveyor found the Starboard fuel tank was leaking.Owner was willing to remove it and repair it ( not replace). You then have to worry about the port tank. There were some other issues as well. The Head was wired for overboard discharge ( not disclosed),not legal for inland waters, there was excessive play in the port outdrive, the bow had a soft spot under the winlass that needed to be repaired and there was no proper backing plate to reinforce it. First time you put too much strain on the winlass ,you have to worry about it pulling right out.
The seller thought none of these things should stop the deal, but the boat was supposed to be turn key,and I really didn't want to buy another project so I bailed. The seller argued that the boat was such a good deal I should just accept the deficiencies...

there you have it...

wow. the bottom line was and is, acceptable survey and sea trial, correct? you found it unacceptable. simple as that. the fact that owner said it was such a deal and you should accept the vessel is asinine. yeah, we need to pay him a visit.
