mid cabin - shorepower relocation

Finally figured out how to post a pic here, only took three years :)

For you mid cabin/express guys, here are a few upgrades which might be of interest:

1) shorepower relocation which I did yesterday. It'll be nice having this be a one man operation. My connection at the slip is only about 3' away. I took this pic before I actually cut over so the snake you see on top of the teak is now a thing of the past. I ran two new 10/3 wires right to the panel rather than trying to extend what was there.

2) A few months back I made an insert for the transom cutout from teak. Thanks to you guys for sending me pics of the factory piece so I had something to reference.

3) I moved the factory bronze step "over" so it's centered in the cutout and also made it bigger with the teak piece. That's routed to fit on top
of the old step which serves as a base.

4) added the bar on the left side of the pic for hanging towels and also serves as a big grab rail

Aside from the swim platform, I think the only other thing I'll do back here is add a flush mounted freshwater washdown, maybe next to the grab rail. I'm also going to add a freshwater wash down connection in the anchor locker when I'm working on the pulpit. That's probably coming off real soon....

Looks good. Just don't forget to disconnect it before you go. Now that it isn't in your way you aren't going to be tripping over it at departure.

you're right, it's a little more out of sight now but someone "should" see it when the stern line comes off the cleat above.

did you fiberglass over the old holes or did you leave the outlets where they were. to save time and effort? for now at least.

No, I removed the old ones and brought them home so I have to fix it. I figured if I let it go, I'd never go back and finish it up. I have shrink wrap over the holes for now.

you're like me. never leave a project unfinished. hell, i even have to tidy up the tool area before i leave the boat even though i'm going back the next day. nice job on the relocation. so, what you actually did was run new wire from the panel, shore 1 and shore 2, and then ran the new to the relocation?
sound pretty cut and dry. have you noticed when you are working on either the ac or dc panel, or even an outlet in the cabin, trojan did not leave a whole lot of extra to work with? i've run into this a number of times when upgrading my outlets. not a lot of extra to work with. good thing i have surgeon/model builder hands. can handle tight fits very easily with plenty of dexterity. well, after my pain med shakes go away. talk about annoying. i look like a parkinsons patient some days. :shock:

I must admit I like that location for the outlets I may do the same thing but install a transfer switch and leave the ones on the side so depending on how a slip is set up I can use either one and do not have to repair the old holes in the side.

Mike, that's actually a good idea and would save you the repair part. I wouldn't hesitate doing that, the original wiring is in great shape. If you're interested in buying my old oulets, shoot me an email.

Aaron, that's exactly what I did. Two new cables all the way. I did have the advantage of a sub woofer behind my corner bench. That made snaking it a lot easier with a 10" opening.

Nice work and a great idea, thank you for the shared info.

On the non-midcabin express, we have a lower transom. Mine will be installed on the inside.

Now, my concept is to leave the factory units as they are.

Question -

why would a transfer switch be needed?

why could I not install two electrical boxes and simply tie new outlet one to the old outlet one, same for outlet 2 and make two runs to the transom?

I would use a transfer switch . You would not want a live male shore power conector . They maybe covered but they would still be live.
