10 Meter Mid-Cabin anchor & rode question.

When I add the new windlass we will need to get the proper rode to go with it. We will also replace the anchor with a Bruce or Delta style.

Since all this needs to be figured out before we buy the windlass I am wondering what size line / chain and how many feet will fit in the locker of a 10 Meter Mid-Cabin? Also what weight anchor is needed?

From what I have read this is a case where bigger is not necessarily better. It sounds like 1/2" line and 1/4" chain is adequate but it seems small to me. Anchor weight seems to be 22 pounds.

Any suggestions?

I would use 5/8 line myself . Anchor weight will depend on anchor used . I like Danforth myself but other like the bruce or delta

You need to find out what size and type of chain and line are specified for the windlass you will be installing. You will eliminate or minimize problems if you use what the windlass was designed to use. Some variance in size of line may work, or maybe not. The chain is usually very specific as to the size and type of chain that will work with the windlass. As to size of anchor, look at West Marine catalog and they will give you a good start with the info on holding power. I usually see what is recommended and then go one size larger, if your windlass will handle the additional weight. I have a 35 pound Delta on my F32.

Do not cut corners here. Proper size/type chain that is recommended for the unit is critical or you could ruin your gypsy $$$.

I have a 22# Delta and just use 5/8 rode on the river. It depends if your in sand, mud, rock or a combination.

The type of anchor you should be using depends on the type of bottom you will likely be anchoring over - soft sand, mud, weedy, rocky, etc... If the bottom varies a lot, you may want to carry more than one type.

Consult West Marine's advisor or the USPS, or simply google 'anchor and bottom type' for other resources. Once you pick the type, you can pick the size.

I believe he is finding out what size line we recommend be fore buying a windlass . IMO a smart idea as some windlass for his size boat will take 1/2 line . IMO too small

Prowlerfish is correct. I'm looking for real world data.

On your 10 Meter Mid-Cabin, are you using:

1/2" rode with 1/4" chain? How many feet of line and chain fit in the locker?

9/16" or 5/8" rode with 5/16" chain? How many feet of line and chain fit in the locker?

You can fit more of the 1/2" X 1/4" rode in the locker giving you greater depth. This combo works on the Lewmar windlass I'm considering.

If I go with a horizontal windlass it will use 9/16" or 5/8" X 5/16". I'm considering this:

I did look at different sources and sizing guides before asking here.

I'll reference what BoatUS recommends as an example:

"Determining how long your anchor rode should be is as simple as multiplying the deepest water you expect to anchor in by 8. As for rope size, the rule of thumb is 1/8" of rope diameter for every 9' of boat length."

9X4=36 feet. 1/8"X4=1/2". A 36' boat would need 1/2" line by these calculations. Correct?

"Chain leads should be half the diameter of the line they attach to-for example, use 1/4-inch chain with 1/2-inch line. Shackles should be a size larger than the chain, and be sure you wire the pin to keep it from coming unscrewed."

1/2 divided by 2 = 1/4". 1/2" line uses 1/4" chain. Correct?

According to this the 1/2" X 1/4" should be correct. I'm just concerned that the sizing is right. Let me know if I am ovethinking this.

For what it's worth 9 times out of 10 we anchor in 25' of water and have a stern anchor in 3' of water to swim in a protected bay!

I have the Lewmar 1000 on my 10 meter with 200ft. of 9/16" rode and 30ft. of 5/16" chain. Fits in locker without problem as it drops directly into the deepest part.
