Im almost certain that we covered this a while back but.. My lower helm has to be turned back and forth a couple of times before it engages, My upper is always fine. My feeling is that its either low on fluid, and has to be bled. Being I never worked on this steering on this Trojan before , can you guys refresh my memory on procedure and where the reservoir is? I think its on the transom starboard side behind one of the lockers, but Im not sure .
and what type of fluid can I use aTF ok?

The reservoir should be near the steering cylinder , at least on most boats .( RWS ?? ) The Hynautic system uses Hynautic fluid ( now sea star ) . you can use atf for a emergency but it is not the recomended fluid
after adding Hynautic fluid the system should be presureised to about 30 psi .
you can also use aircraft hydraulic fluid the meets hydraulic fluid spec MIL-H-5606.

There are three locker doors built into the transom.
The steering system is acessible from the starboard (smallest) door.
I would check the pressure first - before doing anything.
During the refit i changed my Hunautic 3 line system over to a standard 2 line sea star system for a number of reasons.
back to the lockers......
ths smallest is simply an access door to service the steering. The other two are cleverly designed such that the entire locker is removable.
open the locker door, then lift the entire unit up, the bottom tabs can be swung out and then the entire locker is off.
This neat design will allow you access to everything in the transom including the fuel tank inlet hose and the aft bilge pump, bilge pump switch and the emergency horn switch as well as all the steering linkage, ram, fuel tank vent and the posts that house the rudder shafts and seals.
