When you are looking at the condensing unit, how can you tell if it is a straight A/C unit or A/C-Reverse Cycle Heat?

The heatpump model will have a reversing valve and solinoid in its plumbing. Will look something like this:

You will have to see it in person and look for the reversing valve. Other than that, it will take some one with your unit to tell you. The fundemental underlying difference is the reversing valve.

Larry's link shows one kind. It does not show the solenoid. It would be a small square box/coil with wiring over the small tube shown in the link. Another style is a white cube maybe 2"x3" (if original) with wires and refrigeration lines going to it. Usually buried in the middle of the unit close to the bottom depending on vintage.
