Starter Ring Replacement In Water? LM 318

Post by dollarbill »

Can a starter ring on a '78 Trojan 30 Express be replaced in the water? Trying to avoid taking it out of the water... I guess you figured that out by my question.

I will not be doing the work.. and if you know of a good mechanic in the Atlanta area - Lake Lanier - pass that information on as well.

Thanks in advance.

To make life easier, once down to the flywheel bolts mark the flywheel and end of crankshaft as the six bolts are drilled and tapped in a one way pattern. If you don't it is a trial and error to get the bolt alignment correct while dealing with a heavy flywheel.

My new (maybe) mechanic came over yesterday afternoon and said without a crane that the engine cannot be lifted and supported to get access to the starter ring. What is he missing or failing to understand how he can get access and save me the $$$ of yanking it out of the water.

Thanks...

Find yourself a new mechanic. It's done all the time. You can make up an engine hoist with an "A" frame of wood and a come-along. You might possibly get a small bottle jack underneath engine with a block of wood and lift and support the engine while you unbolt the transmission and bell housing to remove the flywheel.
Here's a similar set-up...but I think you have the idea.
