TriCabin Berth Enlargement
Hi, I have removed the outer wall panel, shelf and mirror from the port berth in my tricabin. This panel removal has allowed me to increase the width of the berth by nine inches. The job's not finished yet, but was always one of the projects that I'd always planned to attempt. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that this is progressing in a relatively uncomplicated manner.
At the same time, I have installed batons on the engine's cover frames in order to raise them an extra inch. This will allow me to install modern heat reflecting material on the underside of the engine covers and in so doing, provide better insulation to the rear bedroom from that three hours worth of hot air that radiates off the engines after they've been running. I hate arriving in my favorite bay on a hot evening only to be forced to sleep in the v-bunks because the rear bedroom is stifling.
On that note, I'm installing two new air conditioning/heat units from Flagship Marine. A 16,000 btu unit for the salon and v-bunks and a 12,000 btu unit for the rear bedroom.
So it's a busy spring.
Bottom line, if anyone wants me to do a pictorial on the berth enlargement please let me know.
Best regards to all.
Rick

yes, please, pics of the aft stateroom and it's redesign. having grown up on the v-drive version of the tri cabin, i'm well aware of the post running heat issue. mom and dad hated that, but, they were actually able to reduce some of the heat by running our kohler 7.5kw genset and two fans facing into both engine bays. it worked. not sure how, but it did.

I too am keen to see photos of your modifications.

Aaron, do you recall where the fans were? Did they draw cabin air into the engine compartments? I've been looking at this, but sure would be nice to know how someone solved the problem.
I'd like to see the pics of the berth changes too

Re: TriCabin Berth Enlargement
Hi
Well, I'm still awaiting delivery of my two new air conditioning units and their accompanying paraphernalia from Flagship Marine in Florida. Can't go any further on finishing the rear berth reno till these two units arrive.
After much experimentation, the air conditioner for the rear stateroom (12,000 btu) will be placed in the stern, on a small platform right behind that little access door located between the two berths. Not my first choice but can't think of another option due to size constraints.
I have been assured that they will be shipped later this week.
Thankfully, the good news is that I'm fairly pleased with the "widening of the port berth" project. It was sort of irreversible once I started tearing it apart. So, while awaiting the arrival of the air conditioners, I've managed to get on a roll and have now cut out a curved headboard for the same berth and it is currently at the upholsterers.
My friends on the dock keep stopping in to the storage building in order to check my progress and blame me for the cold rainy weather.
Cheers
Rick

No problem we're all busy these days. Mine are under bunks in the aft cabin (v drive). You mentioned your dad added fans. Just wondering where and how and so forth.

Re: TriCabin Berth Enlargement
dad just had two small floor fans facing each engine access panel turned on to get rid of the heat buildup back there, and one fan that angled up towards the aft deck access door. he used this technique only after a long days run though. but i have to say, even with the engine access doors closed, it did get rather warm in the aft stateroom.Bob Giaier wrote:No problem we're all busy these days. I think I can picture that. I have a hatch on the aft deck that I think I'd have to open when running the fans. Thanks Aaron.
