Onan MCCK 6.5

It seems to me while trying to start my MCCK that the starter was very quiet. Does the 12 volt part of the Generator windings double as the starter also?

Not sure about the onan but our old kohler 6.5 is set up that way----- genny end acts as a stater motor ,starts the engine then at a predetermined point the current is reversed to make it a generator--- same thing though ,very quiet-- Mike

Depending on the vintage; yes. Older ones do that. Later models have a starter mounted externally.

What spec Larry? The key to knowing your MCCK is knowing what spec it is. I would suspect if you have a relatively period correct model you would be somewhere in the spec G range or thereabouts.

Something in that range and you would hear a 'conventional' type of starter engagement and starting noise. You will see on the rear of the unit (flywheel end where you did your waterpump work) that you either have teeth or no teeth on the flywheel that drives the pump belt via that rear pulley. If its got teeth its got a starter motor. Since you already have a good sense of that end of the unit I would suggest thats the fast way to know if its windings actuated or if it has an external starter.
