Okay, trojay 1977 new owner ALSO needs oil change help

Post by dietwrite »

Thanks for everyone's patience..lots of questions.
We just bought a 1977 Trojan cruiser with a 318 chrysler. What weight oil is recommended---planning to use 40 weight because that's what is recommended for mercruiser marine engines. Changing oil tomorrow morning--any comments?

According to the chrysler marine manual which came with my 1975 F-26, page 7, selection of Lubricant states "SAE 30" should be used when the anticipated atmospheric temperature will be above 32 degrees F. SAE 20W in temps below 32 degrees. It also recomends that the oil change should be made every 50hrs or two months, whichever comes first. I did use SAE 30 with good results. I believe the filter was a Fram PH-8 or its equivalent. Good luck with your boat and welcome

30w is what it call for . but If it was my boat I would use 15w-40 I have used it in my last 4 boats incl. my present boat with diesels I like it becuse its a good HD oil that can be used year round . Just my choice
