Replacing Trim Tabs on my F-26

Post by randyp »

After our most excellent Erie Canal Adventure this summer I blew out the the hydraulics on my original Boat Leveller Trim Tabs. I know I can replace the parts that blew out because I've already been in contact with the company (still in existence in St Louis), but I'm also considering updating them to a set of Volvo "QL" electrically controlled trim tabs. These operate by lowering a vertical "gate" from a remote control. No hydraulics. They're pretty recent on the market (2005 I think). Anyone have any experience with these? You can replace the original hydraulic components for about one third of what you can buy the Volvo stuff for. If the original held up since 1977, why would you want to scrap it out, and replace it with new, untried technology from a manufacturer with a reputation as poor as Volvo's?

Point well taken, Danny. I'm going through the same thought process, but have a whole bunch of months now that the boat is up on stands to decide. Was hoping somebody had these on their boat because they're pretty new.

I'll second what Danny says. The only thing I have replaced on my original tab set-up was a cracked and faded upper helm switch and just recently, leaking hydraulic hoses to trim cylinders. Easy to replace and inexpensive.

Beside, why would you want to put a Volvo part on a Trojan anyway?
