RUB RAIL
Currently I am in the process of re finishing and caulking my rub rail. so
I have pulled it apart, scraped the old caulk out and am now faced with this ugly brown and silver worn top and bottom surface that shows.
So here is the dilemma, I am going to prep it (I assume it is some version of PVC on the skins) with a plastic primer and paint it.........So what color will look the best? I have seen Grey (aluminum) and white on bertrams, eggs, and vikings with a few black ones that were rubber. But its hard to find pictures close up on any trojans.
I am leaning to silver/grey or white but want to see a picture first.
So has any one re-painted their rub rail and could you post a picture of what it looked like?

The original color of the rub rail was aluminum. Not silver nor gray but someware between the two colors. When I get around to painting mine that will be the color I'll be shoting for. Rustoleum sells an aluminum color paint. I don't know how well it will stick to the plastic, but it's the right color.

mine is white looks like its been white washed. looks like it may have been gray or silver or like Gerry says aluminum underneath . If I was to repaint it I would go with white myself . I wounder if the changed colors in diffrent years ? as I had seen it brown on 1 F36 or could have been repainted ?

I wondering if mine is just faded so bad its turning white. I have been afraid to paint it as it seems like a plastic of some kind . I saw a older F36 and it looked like it could have wood as my 77 F30 was .
Has anyone painted theirs ?

Another F32 in my Marina painted it Black, looks quite sharp with his Black striping. I am in the process of removing the peeling white paint on mine.
My plan is to buff/polish mine to bring out the wood grain look of the plastic that is on mine. It seems to be a lite beige colour that I think would be less obtrusive than the white I have now. My thinking is that with no paint on it the upkeep will be much easier.

My 76 F 36 has a beautiful [in my humble opinion] teak rub rail with a stainless steel cap going around the whole perimeter of the boat.Matches the teak bow-sprit. Finished with cetol. 2 years ago, removed the cap, flooded all the screw holes with penetrating epoxy, rebeaded at the hull, and refinished...[again]. Love the traditional look.
Re: RUB RAIL
hi guys. I know this is an old post but I need a bit of advice. I just picked up a 73 F36. It has the Teak rub rail which I don't like. I know I know...... I want to replace it with a new rubberized rub rail. The teak is in really bad shape and I'm pretty sure there is water seeping in behind it.

Mike that looks great! did you do it yourself? where did you pick it up at? how much did you need? AND did you have the teak rail prior? I know a lot of questions but thank you in advance.

Re: RUB RAIL
I just reworked mine with 3M striping tape. Looks good and was easy to apply. Getting the previous tape off was the hard part.
I used black but the possibilities are endless.

Re: RUB RAIL
What do you mean by reworked? I'm assuming you didn't have teak?

I just refinished mine this spring. I cleaned the black part with acetone and used SEM Trim black which is an automotive trim paint in a can. I've used this on car trim for years and it holds up great.

Sorry on all counts it was on the boat when I got it--- I thought I would show you what the black looked like---- looks like it came in lengths because there are joints in it----MikeJmarkroy wrote:Mike that looks great! did you do it yourself? where did you pick it up at? how much did you need?
