Flying Bridge Mishap?

Post by tclewis »

Several weeks ago, my wife and I took some friends out on our 1979 44 foot Trojan for an afternoon trip. All four of us were on the flyingbridge when another boat went by us and their wake rocked us. The acess to the flybridge on this Trojan is a trap door that leans against a rail. There was no method provided by Trojan to keep it open. Therefore, unless one used a bungee cord to keep it open, it would flip down. It did. I sometimes forget the bungee cord, so in nine years it has fallen many times, but this time the little "L" shaped key from below slipped and --you
guessed it--we were trapped. All four of us on the bridge. Now what?

Someone suggested that one of us should climb down with a line and let everyone else out. I decided this was too dangerous. Jump overboard? No, I didn`t like that idea either. It would be too hard to get back on board.

Fortunately this was a weekend and there were boats at anchor only a few miles away. Upon arriving, I asked a man on a boat with a dog aboard ( people with dogs are always friendly) if he could help. After he stopped laughing, the man climbed aboard and let us out. We later sent him a gift in appreciation.

Now that's a funny story !

Sounds like time to install one of those pressurized gas shocks on that hatch!

Slike you need a way to unlock it from both sides or just do away with the lock/latch . That is funny
