Hello Everyone,
I was going through the required emergency equipment list today that is required by law and I was just looking for some input on what other items people consider as must haves on the boats. Maybe there are even a few lists some people might have of what they carry .

Re: Emergency Preparedness
Thats a great question !
Emergency equipment ? Besides what is required Of course extra flares ,life jackets with reflective tape and strobe on 2 jackets . Extra fire exutusers in diffrent locations so you can get to them . A ditch bag with a Epirb/plb , hand held VHF ,signal devices . I also have canister life raft ( 6 man ) . And plugs to stop leaks in thru hulls
Safety gear ? Back up VHFs hooked up to different batteries back up gps . Radar , to me a every important safety idem

Dont forget the First Aid Kit.
Stuff gets old in there. Bandages, bandaids, burn cream, etc.
And a good bottle of scotch!

As Paul says, redundancy and carrying more of what you need than the list says, and a set of bungs. Extra hoses and clamps. Epoxy putty. Sealant. Of course (Canadian solution) ..... DUCT TAPE. Spare props. Radar reflector. Bilge pump running lights.
I don't have this, but plumb the cooling water intake for your engines to either take from the thru-hull, or the bilge at the flip of a valve. If you hit something and your bilge pumps are being overwhelmed, you can use a running engine to also drain the bilge.
Carry stuff that the regs say a boat bigger than you needs (more than you 'need' but could use). Redundancy for electronic safety equipment, and paper (charts) or handheld backup systems in case those fail.
Keep a constant watch out for things that aren't right -- new vibrations, smells, smoke, instruments going weird, bilge pumps kicking in..... see the problem coming before it becomes a problem.
One of the biggest things : don't just carry what the list says... know how to use it.

Re: Emergency Preparedness
Thanks some things I had not considered but will now. I finally just got up and running this weekend with the new engines and it looks like my fuel tanks are ok after all it was a different issue but its resolved now. I was going through my safety equipment and I have the required equipment but it just didnt seem like enough so I thought I would throw the question out there
