Gas Tank Sender Float

My gas gauge stopped working on my 1989 10.8 International this week. I pulled the sender unit today and learned that the cork float was sinking in the tank. I have since learned that the ethanol gas breaks down whatever coating was originally on the cork. Has anyone been able to dry the cork out and seal it with something more permanent? I have looked online and it doesn't look like I can just replace the cork. Any advice would be appreciated.

not sure how deep your tanks are and sorry i cant help with the float but at the $17 price of this new sender it might just be worth installing it and tossing the old one or stealing the float off of it, the new ones are plastic

I would replace the complete sender . The float maybe the issue now but how long before electric part fails ? FWIW I replaced mine with Wema units work they very well . Make sure you get a sender that is the same range as you gauges .

So I decided to order a new float instead of worrying about changing the cork. The float is mechanical and was very easy to install with one issue. The new sending unit came with screws that had some typed of thread sealant on them. My issue is that the supplied screws seemed to be a bit too long and I could not get them to seat. I decided to reuse the existing screws but am now thinking I should have some sealant on those screws. Should I use put Permatex 2 on the threads. Also, how snug should the screws be??? Thanks for any suggestions.
