Caulk

Post by abkeywest »

Hi All,

I need to caulk around my windless riser which is made of teak. The last stuff I used was a marine grade silicone, after a short amount of time it pulled away from the teak. What type do you recommend? It needs to be white and adhere to teak and fiberglass.

Thanks

Teak has natural oils that will prevent good adhesion with caulk. You can wipe the surface oil off by wiping the area you want to caulk with acetone. I would recommend 3M 4000 UV caulk, as it has more adhesion properties than silicone, yet can still be removed easily. It is also UV resistant, so it will stay pliable after extended exposure to the sun.

I would use Bed-it Butyl tape and follow this guys page... I bought product from him and did my windlass on my teak pulpit also .... works great on that application and more.

Except he needs to add the removal of coring material with epoxy replacement prior to sealing.

I like using the tape for bedding but I think the poster just wants to caulk around the outside of the base.

Were it me I would lift it and rebed with Butyl around the edge which will last longer than he will likely have the boat.
