Thanks guys. It took lots of soul searching to do it, but with the cost of new gas assemblies, gears, harnesses and gauges costing as much as $35k vs. these complete diesel packages plus electronic controls coming in at $51k, I am going ahead with the diesels. It was gonna cost right at $50k for reman Yanmar 315 all inclusive packages. I doubt I will regret it, as I've owned the boat for 25 years, I intend to own her as long as I'm able to run her. I admit I am pretty damn excited.

New 6BY3-260's. I was comparing the price of brand new 260 packages to remanunfactured 315 packages. Both packages include evrything for the conversion (engines,gears, harness, panels, etc.). It works out to be about $3k more for the new 260's, but I get factory electronic shift and throttle, NMEA interface, trolling valves and warranty, but less horsepower than the reman 315's. 260 should be enough horsepower though, as conservative calculations indicate she should be able to cruise around 24kts and top out around 27kts, which is right where I want to be. The 260's are actually BMW diesels marinized by Yanmar. They're like the ideal diesel replacment for a 350 Chevy. You can check out the specs at us.yanmar.com

Jim at marineenginesdirectLLC is just finishing remanufacture of a pair of 315's. He says 'everything' is reman (new piston rings, rod and main bearings, cylinder heads, crankshafts polished, gaskets, etc. reconditioned starters, alternators, after coolers , turbochargers, etc.) He put together a package quote which included gears, harnesses, dual station 'controls', etc. for $49,895.00. Keep in mind these are mechanical engines so I assume controls just means start/stop and instruments. They would not have electronic shift and throttle.gettaway wrote:David,

I can tell you, reman Yanmar 315's are typically sold before the rebuild is finished, as the 315 is no longer in production and available new. Now the highest hp 6 cylinder Yanmar makes is 260 hp. From there they jump to a 320 hp 8 cylinder. Not sure why, because the 315 was extremely popular.

Congrats on the upgrade.
From my experience, the truth is you will be very happy with the choice to repower to new diesels.
Reliability is key, and you will certainly be keeping a good maintenance schedule, not paying for a previous owners sins.
The performance and economy will be awesome for you.
It will completely change the character of the boat, and all for the better.
For me, the difference was beyond amazing, in all respects, including docking with the bigger props and additional torque.
I also found myself sticking the fuel tank, as I could not believe the difference in fuel burn.
You have made an outstanding choice.
The Yanmar 6 LP 315 horse 6 cyl turbodiesel was dropped from production because although it met US EPA Tier one AND Tier two, it failed to meet Tier Three emissions requirements.
The 6 LP is an overhead cam, 4 valve per cylinder high RPM/low displacement mechanical diesel and runs zero electronics, your engine will not feature this benefit, but will be even more efficient.
It is, however important to reduce the risks of salt water/salt air/corrosion exposure.
Before your installation, I strongly suggest that you open every electrical connector you can and apply di-electric grease to every connection possible.

The benefits of electronic Diesels is no smoke and smell , run much quieter . In fact it will be hard to tell you have diesels . So the negative part of diesels is 99% gone .

It will be 30+ days before they even get here. In the meantime I'll be pulling the the Chevy's and painting the egine room, all outside in the winter. Fun times ahead.

Actually, with the additional sound insulation I added on top of the factory stuff, the Yanmar Turbodiesels are actually QUIETER than the Crusader 454's !

900lb Yanmar 315s should be nice (must have a great intercooler and the boost cranked up) ... not sure you need 630HP in an F32, but it should run 33-36 knots I would guess ... get out the ski ropes!

Rereading I am confused Did you order the 260hp new or 315 reman ? I was thinking you ordered the new 260 hp .

Twin 6BY3-260s will work great ! The 260HP on this 183cid(2.9L) engine is at 4,000RPM ... seems high for a diesel, but they've got to get power somehow. The "continuous duty" rating of 198hp @ 3,600RPM will work fine ...
Peak Torque looks like about 490ft.lbs @ 2,300-2,700RPM, so this will be a great power range for planing.

I read a magzine article about a boat manufacturer that compared two identical brand new boats, one with a single new Yanmar 260, and another one with a single new 300 hp 350 Chev. The 350 came out of the hole a little faster, went about 1.2 kts faster at top end (something like 31.5 kts to the Yanmar's 30.3 kts), but the Yanmar boat went 30% farther on the same amount of fuel.

30% better on fuel than a EFI gasser it will be 50%or more over your carb engines and you will cruse faster
