I finally bought a 36 tri-fly

It took time but it was fun...

After looking a quite a few, I settled on one that I though I could tackle. All the parts are there and in relatively good shape. I got a survey done but for insurance purposes only. I was not willing to have an uninsured liability sitting next to "nice" boats...

When the surveyor got to the marina, it was -24 deg. C here in Ottawa. He found some items to look into but of course, could not do a proper sea trial. Also, at -24 it is hard to check stringers and deck for soft spots. It will be a surprize in the spring...
Since it has been resting on the hard for 2 years, I guess the first items to tackle will be to service the engines and drives, replace the water impellers and batteries and see if they run. That being said, I have no idea how I can test the engines without being in the water without damaging anything. I am sure some of you have done this before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully they will run ok. If not, the boat is at a marina with the transom on the water. It will mike a nice enough cottage for the summer :D

Wow good for you...how you stuck with this in the dead of winter is amazing.......as for running the engines, its pretty easy really all you need is a water supply (hose),connect to intake raw water hose and run slow to start then open up as engine runs, or put engine intake hose in bucket of water and keep filling bucket as needed....good luck with your boat...Mike

Just curious, due to the purchase and investment in my boats I only carry Liability insurance on the and the dock they are in, plus I use a balloon liability policy of 1M. The cost of all is about 200 to 300 per year.

Why do you need a surveyor. Is there something I am missing as I am willing to take the hit on the boat costs. Insurance will haul it out. Maybe most want to cover themselves for all losses. Just saying?

Thanks for the info Mike!

I am so excited about it. I just can't wait to get the heat shrink off... I do know not to put them in drive as to not damage the bearings.

Larry,

The insurance companies I was dealing with would not have it any other way... In the end, I insured the boat for a base price but mostly for liability as well.

No survey needed down here in Tx for liability only.

Hey Christian, I'm glad you found one. I'm having mine delivered to my home in a couple weeks so I can start work on it.

I plan to go through the drive gear first as well, possibly we can share some info along the way.

You've seen mine...... can't wait to see yours ;)

Larry, most insurance Company's (surprised not yours) require a survey on older boats that may bring to light issues that could cause a major liability claim. ie; an explosion, fire, sinking at the dock, etc. :shock: Just saying.

Congratulations Christian. I am sure that you will enjoy the boat very much. I have only had mine for 1 full season but I can tell you what I have learned from it. This is my 3rd Trojan from this era. Let me know if you have any questions.
