Yes, it's home, now I can get ripping it apart, I think you were wise walking away from this one! It's going to be a complete gut and reassemble, including both of the 400 Chryslers (which I can rebuild for about $800 a piece)
Glad you got one that is near ready to go, good luck with it
I don't know much about the Tri Fly now, but I will be an expert by the time I'm done. If you need anything let me know
P.S. I had Van Tuyl Transport from Welland move it, they were excellent. Very nice, professional and $1100 from Stoney Creek to Aylmer. They picked it up and the stands and blocking and set it back up at my place. And didn't mind me videoing the whole event

Glad you got her home. Please post some picture will you! What's wrong with the engines?
As for myself, I spent the day at the boat and planning on sleeping here tonight. I believe it will be a cold one... I had a buddy over again today. We removed 3 big garbage bags of stuff, the bunk beds in the v-berth and finally the shrink wrap. Tomorrow, I have to check out the suspicious hole and remove a trough hull... I'm checking them out one by one.
Great fun but I'm not sure I will be able to put it in the water this summer. Its all about the journey
Hi Christian, I'm glad you'll get to use your new boat this year.
Both of the motors are "stuck'" likely seized . the intake manifold is cracked on one, (I didn't see that!)
I planned on a 2 year project anyhow, and I have a small Cruiser Inc. I worked on all winter for this year.
I laugh a little every time I walk by the boat at how big these things are out of the water, gives the neighbours a reason to come over for a visit I guess.

Oh!
Sorry to hear that Barrie.
For me, things are so far so good. I finally got a closer look at the suspicious plug on the starboard side. This is what it looks like from outside...

again from the inside

I think I will fill the hole proper.
I also wonder if the vertical bar on the port side of the helm is structural or is it just a grab handle? I would like to remove it to put a flat screen TV on there...
At first I thought so as well but I think I saw the the throttle and shifter runs on the starboard "A pillar". A lot of electrical looms apparently go through there. This tube is about 1 inch in diameter and the bottom is affixed to the head ceiling... It is only on 1 side. Come to think of it, it might be for steering components? Oh well! No big deal. Next week I'll figure it out.
As Big D says, the tube is probably to run some wiring up to the bridge helm. Not obvious to me that it is original (although the block at the top is Trojan bilge paint grey) ... maybe a previous owner decided it was easier to go straight up with some additional wiring for some new gizmo (like maybe speaker wires for what appears to be a stereo sitting beside the pole?), than run the wiring across to the side pillar and fish it up from there. If there is no wiring going through it, I would fear someone put it in to brace the bridge...
As for the thru-hull.... that is a depth transducer - or at least what's left of one. Normally on the inside of the hull it is like a big threaded bolt, and has a nylon or plastic nut or other retention device to hold the transducer in position. Something like this http://www.cruzpro.com/thd1aw_cable.jpg
The fact that yours appears hollow inside and has no obvious retention nut, looks like someone cut it off inside the hull, added that brace to hold things in place, and maybe splooshed some caulk in / on / around it. Not a proper (reliable) seal. If it was properly installed using 3M 5200 or similar this might not be an issue, but if it was cheapo regular caulking this is a huge risk. Since you don't know what was used... you should err on the side of safety.
You could remove it fully and properly plug / seal the hole, or don't know if you could get away with filling the void with epoxy, and maybe glassing it on the inside of the hull? Guys like Big D would know better than me if that would work. Having said that, you would need to get rid of all grease/oil/contaminants on that block and around the area or the glassing / epoxy will be useless.
The easiest way to find out about the tube is look on the floor at the upper helm to see if cabling of any kind runs into the floor of that area. I'm used to seeing the race and smaller solid steering rod on the same side as the lower helm. The puzzling thing about it being simply a brace to hold up the top is that it goes through the piece of ply. If it were to brace the top, one would think it would simply be mounted to/over that ply.
As CM noted, any method you use to properly seal the thru-hull fitting will require that there is absolutely no oil in the area and that it's completely dry. In this case, I THINK it's a solid glass hull but someone else may be able to comfirm. As such, I would just use polyester resin and for sure layers of glass mat. Grind out a depression on both sides, then glass away. Before you grind though, clean the area thoroughly then wash it with acetone or you'll grind oil residue into the area being repaired.

LOL, just read your whole post Christian. I see it's NOT going to hit the water this year
My boat also has the stainless tube from bathroom to upper deck, I think the upper steering shaft runs down it???, I will investigate further tonight and take a couple pictures.

As far as the tube, does the boat have mechanical steering? that could be the shaft from the upper helm to a gearbox in the engine room, My previous F-32 had a similar tube but it ran down next to the lower helm, if you turn the wheel at the lower helm, see if the tube rotates

If it is mechanical steering, be thankful, you'll never worry about air in the system, leaky cylinders or wheel stations
Hey Christian, that tube does in fact have the steering shaft inside.
The shaft goes from the upper helm to the bilge in that tube. Then into 90 degree gearbox, becomes a chain over to the lower helm
This picture shows the gearbox in the bilge under the corner of the head in line with the tube above.

Ha! Thanks Barrie. Fantastic picture.
I will try to go to the boat for a few hours tomorrow but won't be spending the night there. I have visitors for the weekend...
Anyhow, This week, I got 2 new bronze seacocks, ordered a plate of FR-4 (G-10) 5/8" thick and all the bronze hardware to replace the 2 raw cooling water intakes for the engines including the plywood. I am actually thinking of replacing all of the seacocks. Really the discission is pretty much taken. I think I need at least 5 smaller ones for the v-drives and for the generator. I will measure the sizes tomorrow and probably order them on Monday. Whiles I was at it I got some new hoses for all of the v-drives. They are in bad shape as seen on the picture and commented by 1967...
I think I'm going to start a new thread if I can't find one dedicated to seacocks and keep this one opened for other interesting stuff.
