Crossing over
So, currently I cruise around on ADRIFT. She is a 1980 Catalina 27 sailboat. I really enjoy her, but I'd like to have a few more creature comforts...like air conditioning lol.
The marina that I'm docked at has put this trojan international 10 meter boat up for sale and since they know I like projects have given me first dibs.
First. I know both engines and generator do start. The oil does look clean. I spun the wheel around but it just spins. I assume it's hydraulic?
The interior isn't terrible. Could use some serious cleaning. All the cushions are in good shape but there seems to be some water intrusion from somewhere. I'm not sure if it's hatches or somewhere else. Also the door to v berth is missing.
Does have a newer chart plotter. Forget name right now.
Anyway he is asking $3,500 for her. Good deal?
At this point I'd have 2 slip rentals so I've got some thinking to do.
I'm trying to upload pictures. Might be tomorrow

Re: Crossing over
Good be a great deal , but could be a money pit . The boat looks to be very neglected . It could just need a good clean up . But could need a lot more . You should consider a survey . The steering should be hydraulic , sounds like its low on fluid , so adding and bleeding the system is in order . then looking for leaks .

Re: Crossing over
Welcome to the board from a Texas located 120 mile from Bossier/Shreveport I go down to Calcasieu occasionally with my bay boat. Let me know if you take the plunge into it. Less money is always better unless you are the seller.

Re: Crossing over
Agreed. A survey is in order and unfortunately that will constitute a haul out. I would certainly argue that the marina pays for the haul out or performs it for free if it's within their service portfolio.
There are generally two types of surveyors... One you want when you are buying, and another you want when you are selling
Unless you know a good one already, try to find one that is a stickler with a stubborn reputation.... It will cost you a few hundred, but it may save you thousands. It may also help you negotiate a better price. If the seller cannot provide any kind of previous survey, I would argue the seller to pay for it, or settle on half, but I get to choose the surveyor.
Otherwise you have a boat that floats with 3 motors that start. A sea trial is in order to make sure all the running gear works. That would mean repairing the steering. It may be OK once you top it off with fluid and give it a bleed, but it DOES leak and it WILL eventually fail, so proceed with caution.
The gel coat will clean up, but it will take countless hours of washing, compounding, and waxing.
This is a tricky one... No clear answers here and the risk level is high. Let us know how you make out.

Re: Crossing over
I do know that the previous owner bought this boat after being awarded a substantial sum of money. But, like so many others he blew it all. The marina told me he just quit coming by and then quit paying for the slip. So I do know it wasn't abandoned due to any issues with the boat.
I'll go by today and see if I can work out a haul out deal.
I had a bottom job on my sailboat last year so I am quite familiar with what can be lurking under the water line.

I don't know the international Model codes but that is a Trojan number for the year 1984

Re: Crossing over
Had her hauled out yesterday. Bottom looked really good. It appears one engine will need to be raised a little as the shaft is low(they said I can do this myself). No soft spot or blistering. Heck the paint didn't even look that bad.
So basically I have no reasons to say no right now.
I'm going to crunch some numbers this morning and factor in the fact I will now have 2 slip rentals to slip rentals now.
So, I'll let y'all know.

Re: Crossing over
welcome to two slip rentals, and my dock is 200 yards out in the lake, no power and have to take the marina water taxi to get to both. Now I know how the cold north Trojan boaters feel in the winter. BUT THIS IS SUMMER! Have not been to the boats in a month.

Well, She's all mine. Spent about 3 hours last night scrubbing the outside. Need to clean out inside in the next few days before I start going through the electrical system.
