Sherwood G-7 Raw Water Pump
We were all set yesterday for a leisurely cruise up to The Grande Dunes Marina (North Myrtle Beach, Sc) for lunch at the Anchor Cafe. We had our friends onboard from California & were looking forward to a day on the ICW. Upon starting the engines I noticed very little water exiting the exhaust on the port engine. I increased the rpm's to 1200 and there was no change in the amount of water coming out. I decided to call off the trip & we drove down to Kae Ray's in Murrells Inlet for lunch.
I removed the raw water pump today & upon inspecting the impeller reassured me of my decision yesterday! I should have known better... I should have inspected those impellers when we first purchased the boat back in April.
Ordered (2) total rebuild kits today (Sherwood #23977) & some new 1.250" ID hose for pump to oil cooler(s). I will pull the starboard pump off today & prepare it for the rebuild.

Wow. Those are pretty bad. It makes me wonder where the pieces went.

Re: Sherwood G-7 Raw Water Pump
I pulled the thermostat housing off & found some large pieces of the impeller lodged inside. I wonder how many more pieces are in the engine circulating water pump! I'd better buy extra circulating pump gaskets as that will have to be removed for inspection also.
The thermostat is stamped 9. 90 140 I know the 140 is a 140 degree thermostat is the 9. 90 the date of mfg? Sept 1990?

Re: Sherwood G-7 Raw Water Pump
I have had good luck finding impeller pieces by back flushing the system with a nylon stocking on the end where the water comes out. If you match up the pieces, you can decide if there are any missing, in which case you need to take it apart to find them.

Re: Sherwood G-7 Raw Water Pump
I am raw water cooled ,and it might be over kill, but I change the impellers and thermostats yearly. I figured for the few $$$ spent well worth piece of mind and so much easier doing it on land
Re: Sherwood G-7 Raw Water Pump
I am fresh water cooled and change my impeller and t-stat annually also. A lot of people say the impeller will go for a couple years and the t-stat will last 5 years. I have never had to chase impeller vanes or cancel a trip due to temperature.

Re: Sherwood G-7 Raw Water Pump
Anyone have an idea of the stamping on the impeller? " 9. 90 " could that be the year it was manufactured?
