Starting Problem
Was wondering what the alternative to solenoid / resistor / coil / etc that the 318 has. Any suggestions. The old 318 runs great but there must be a better system with less parts to replace??

And welcome to the forum!
Pertronix offers a large selection of electronic conversion kits and full distributors, I just don't have any experience with them (yet).

Re: Starting Problem
Welcome to the forum . If you have the factory electronic ignition on your 318 its a dam good system . Better then any aftermarket one . its really not that complicated . I don't know if there is a kit to convert it to anything else .Halifax26Trojan wrote:Was wondering what the alternative to solenoid / resistor / coil / etc that the 318 has. Any suggestions. if you have a points system you can get kits to convert them to electronic .
Unless your having issues you really don't need to replace a lot of parts . What sort of issues are you having ?

What is the "Starting Problem" you're having, and what leads you to believe that it's ignition related?
What kind of ignition do you have, points?
If so, there are a few options;
- Mallory and Pertronix both sell conversion kits to do away with the points and condensor. These are a good compromize between doing away with points and a new distributor. They do not correct runnability issues as a result of distributor wear. I've installed both Mallory and Pertronix kits and have had a couple of failures with both. Having said that, I have had first generation Pertronix kits in mine for years and have never had an issue. Pretty easy installs but follow the instructions as there are voltage considerations to be aware of that will affect performance. In case of a failure at see, it's a good idea to keep your old points and condensor on board so you can reinstall to get back home. If you're handy and are comfortable with points, they're good but I have found that not worrying about points anymore allowed me to cross off just one more thing on my regular maintenance list.
- Mallory and Pertronix also sell new electronic distributors if your units are worn or close to needing rebuilds. I've installed Mallory YLM units and haven't had any issues so I think they are a good build. It's been a while so I don't know if they still carry units for counter-rotating engines if that applies to you. Each manufacturer also has coils, etc. to go along with their units.
