Throttles Loose - Set Screw?

Hi, all. First-time poster, first power boat (77 F36 Tri-Cabin) purchased last month. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions, have been lurking on this forum for more than a month finding all of the answers I need and I have to say, one of the best boating forums on the net.

My question concerns my throttles: they are loose, requiring what the PO referred to as "tapping" to sync to the right RPM. (He made it look easy with his ten-plus year's experience on the boat, but for someone just learning it's a real PITA). The issue appears to be all in the controls, and probably not in the cables. A friend with far more technical and boat repair experience than me has been looking them over, and he seems convinced that our first step should be trying to simply make an adjustment to the set screw (pictured). Before we get into this I'm wondering if anyone here has already dealt with this, and if so whether the set screw is something that an adjustment might fix - or whether attempting to adjust them might render them inoperable. He's not 100% sure. If anyone has any feedback I'd love to hear it.

The set screw will control the drag on the control .

Yes the set screws push a nylon piece onto shafts. While discussing theses controls there at least two types in this brand. If the actual handles come loose, one type has screws from outside that tighten them. The other you have to separate the two halves and the securing screws can be found in the center of the shaft coming from inside to outside, tighten them. The ends of these handles has a tapered end and once tight will not move unless the screws get loose. I lubed the nylon bushings with white lithium grease, lubriplate.
