Radar

Post by Jimmy »

Looking for some guidance (no pun intended) on what is a good radar system to upgrade to. Current unit is a raytheon (raymarine) dome with an old CRT green screen that Noah probably used during the flood. Still works, but I have little to no confidence in its life, and know it will die in the worst of conditions.

Putting it on a 1988 11 meter.

The main usage will be the great lakes, but also hoping the big loop is on the horizon.

I have all Garmin, but since it's really an integrated system, it was sort of my only choice once I went with that manufacturer. Do you have any other chartplotters or electronics on there now?

I installed a Garmin GMR 24 HD closed array dome in 2012 and have had good luck with it. I have it plugged directly into a 740S multi function display, which would probably be a little small for you boat, however this radar unit can be used with any size Garmin display either directly or thru a NMEA system. This radar unit is plug and play and is user friendly.

I would have preferred an open array unit but the smallest one offered by Garmin at the time I believe was 4 feet wide. This would have made my small boat look like a helicopter.

Ill have to go with a new monitor. I do have a Garmin GPS, and the integration with that is not a must with the radar. So I am not stuck with Garmin ( not that I am opposed to Garmin).

Lol the helicopter approach may come in handy in heavy seas....
