Just woke up from the food-coma induced over the past few days....whew! Sorry I missed wishing all of you and yours the very best for the holidays, so let me be the first to wish you and yours a HAPPY NEW YEAR. Let's all hope fuel prices stay as low or lower in 2009 so we can really enjoy our Trojans.

passenger coma

Post by TADTOOMUCH »

aaron,

How do you cope with all the passengers who carry every known virus to man. Every time I travel by air, I get a horrendous cold. I just got back from Florida and I now have had this cold for two weeks and it almost killed me. Worst one I have ever had. Any secrets you use to stay healthy? I have tried taking multi vitamins before during and after a trip and I still catch whatever is floating around the cabin. I threaten my wife that I will wear one of those SARS masks next time if I thought it would help. I really love to fly but getting a guaranteed cold every time isn't worth it.

welcome to my world. it's like working in a giant PETRI DISH. i always disinfect the areas i work in with anti microbial towlettes ( i should own stock in safetec). i also keep my self well hydrated, i carry vitamin c, airborn works wonders too. i NEVER pick up after a service with out plastic gloves, i never touch arm rests unless i wipe em down either. i always wash my hands, especially after i touch money. i take a multi vitamin and i try to get as much rest as i can when i am in a layover city. i also carry zicam with me and use it at the first sign of a cold.
the biggest thing you can do is ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS. it's as simple as that. also, drink plenty of water (stay away from soda and alcohol) as your defenses go down when you are dried out, especially at 35,000 feet. NEVER USE THE AIRCRAFT PILLOWS AND BLANKETS-----if you want to know why, ill be glad to tell you but it's really gross......... we do get sick from time to time, and with only 4 sick calls allowed in a 12 month period, some of us actually go to work with a cold.... not me though.... my inner ear is too important and found out the hard way about 15 years ago. the type of plane also goes into play........ the newer airbus aircraft and the newer boeings have more recirculated than fresh air, so, there is more chance of germs cascading through the cabin air system. i dont care what anyone says, whenever i work the ''bus'' my sinus cavity is really dried out. the older boeings have more fresh to recirc air, and that makes a big difference too. the new 787 will be better since it is a composite airframe and the cabin pressure can be higher and moisture added to the pressurization system since it will not corrode.
if you all have any more questions, feel free to ask. i'm happy to assist.
oh, and please do not hand us a dirty diaper when we are on the food and beverage carts...... yuck!!!! (and yes, it does happen) if you ever want to see how filthy the human race can be, spend the day as a flight attendant. :D

okay, I can't help myself. There are really only 2 significant bugs that can be transmitted in an aerosolized form [can get it from breathing the air in a closed cabin], those being tuberculosis, and legionnaires disease. Most respiratory viruses, the ones you pick up when you're traveling are transmitted by touch. The typical route is face to hand to hand to face. when someone has a cold, if they touch their face their hand is contaminated with viral particles, you shake their hand, later touch your face, and then you get the cold. Handwashing is excellent advice, but also make an effort not to touch your face, especially after shaking hands, and you could also use those alcohol based hand gel products.
[I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself, poorly developed frontal lobes, unable to curb my impulses, which is probably why I'm doomed to boating.]
