My boat came with one installed under the stbd manifold. Knowing how much load their under and how little fluid the Velvet drive holds, I wouldn't consider not having one installed.

Just my 2 cents.

Ok Paul, being that I have it, I guess it wouldnt make much sense not to use it,
just concerrned, you know with my luck, the thing will start putting water into the v drive, then,, you know the rest, Im sure its fine, but will opt to have it tested Im assuming the inner core is the part that flows the raw water?
also if anyone has a pic of the hookup ports on their v drive, Id appreciate it, if not Im sure I can figure it out
seems pretty straight forward

Pressure test it if you're worried.

I was out at my boat today so I took a couple of photos.

Image

I believe the top fitting is oil out and the one at the bottom is the return.

This is the hook up at the cooler.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the pictures Paul, that really helps,,
and by the way, nice engine bay, very clean, I hope mine comes out that nice once completed, I see whoever painted the bilge used the same stuff on my boat, at least it looks the same
Im going to go out to the boat in a while and check those connections. I see yours are braided, mine are blue compression lines, looks like they were made up for this set up,
Ill keep you posted
here is a picture I took the other night of the v drive I think I see where the hoses go, on yours they go off to the side of the engine, mine will be directly overhead of the drive, so no 90 degree bends will be needed,Image

Thanks Ross,

Gugliemo6160,

That short run of hose should work out well for you. Mine run off to the side of the engine where as you can see the cooler is factory installed. This makes changing spark plugs a pain in the AXX.

Always happy to help.

hey Paul, on that lower line/ fitting for the trans cooler, the one at the bottom , I havent measured it yet, but the plug at the bottom of the v drive looks much like the end of a garden hose male end. Im going to have to get an adaptor as the pressure lines I have didnt come with one,
just wanted to make sure this is the correct fitting, you can see it at the bottom of my picture, looks much like a pipe thread plug.
and Im assuming it will leak out when I remove this fitting, so next question is it Dextron? smells and looks like it,
just wanna be sure

Guglie,

It is an NPT pipe thread at this location. I used an NPT reducing bushing to provide the correct thread size for installing the fitting for the line. (if you look close at the previous picture you can see it) And yes, when you remove that plug you'll be draining the oil from the trans. Dexron or compatible oil is what's required to replace it. I use Amsoil synthetic ATF Low Viscosity in my velvet drive.

Hope this helps,

Dexron of any ATF ( not picky just don't mix). IMO I would stay away from synthetic
