this is located just under the heat exchange tank,
I think I know what it is, but would like some other opionions, one side is connected to the bottom of the heat exchange tank, the other goes to the bottom of the starboard exhaust manifold[img][/img][img][/img]

Oil cooler; used for engine or tranny oil. If only one on engine, most likely tranny oil cooler. Some big blocks have both.

depending on use- very important. Also very important to make sure it's sound since one side (large ports) carry sea water and the small ports carry transmission fluid.

The "separation" walls can and do fail which can cost you the tranny. There not too expensive- I'd get a new one with some new lines and install it.

Hook it up - heat is the worst thing on a tranny.

I would have it pressure tested before hooking it back up. Could be well worth the few dollars to check it out than destroying a tranny. JMO :) :)

My first thought was,,,if their not hooked up now, how did the tranny get cooled. If they are cooled in a different way now, and haven't been hooked up,,,,why hook them up now. If not needed,,,I'd remove them altogether.

Oh,,,I was under the impression that a heat exchanger was installed and thus the fresh water oil cooler would no longer be needed, being the reason it was not hooked up? But at the same time there would have to be hoses from the tranny going to and from the heat exchanger, much as the same thing in autos with the tranny cooling tubing goes thru the radiator.

Larry, the trans cooler is its heat exchanger the one one on your engine only cools your engine same goes for the oil cooler.

from what I see, the cooler is new, never used, its been sitting around, and never hooked up, I even have brand new lines that came in a box, they to are new
and someone here mentioned that all v drives are running a cooler? is this correct? as I think I remember never seeing them on my F 31 last year, , and the one I have now is not hooked up as well,
I guess my question is, does it have to be hooked up or can I bypass it with a new section of rubber tubing, as I would rather not have something else that could go wrong and fill my v drive up with water, there is no way to tell if it does is there?
