paul you are correct, I assumed he would know to take the bite on the end that has the clamp on it, use the clamp as the holder so as not to collapse anything. I should not assume I guess.

For sure one would not eant to press it in the middle causing deformation of the cylinder.

Some heat may be an option as it may have thread locking compound in threads and the heat would soften that. If only the pinned end comes out gotta have a pin spanner wrench. brint it down to texas I have a couple.

Option, take it to a hydraulic shop for advice.

Question both ends are packing glands so do both ends unscrew?

Repair

Post by davidsmith »

I repaired one in the past but the ends did not screw off. There was a small hole near the end. I took a hack saw and opened the hole a little and pulled a small square wire out. The end cap came right off. There was a groove cut in the inside of the bore and the end cap. After rplacing the o-rings I reassembled and reinstalled the wire. Still working today after 5 years.

david is right, some cylinders have a wire that is insertedin a hole and the gland turned around drawint the wire inside of the cylinder locking the gland in. That is why I suggested going to a hydraulic shop for advice.

may be not threads at all to unscrew. Usaually you can see the wire keeper sticking out of the whole as it has a 90 degree bend on one end.

above URL shows opening a large cylinder with a spanner. They suggest, which is a good idea to unscrew it while it is mounted that way no danger of crushing in a vice.

Finished installing new cylinder

Post by foofer b »

Finally bought a new cylinder from SeaTech.com, a Seastar (teleflex brand) replacement for my old Sytten cylinder. It was $350 plus had to get a mounting adapter for another $140. Installation was pretty straightforward, and fortunately the old hydraulic lines fitiings fit the new cylinder. Have yet to bleed them. Oh and the Seastar brand Hydro fluid was $23 a friggin quart and ya nedd two!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will post if the bleeding process is much of a bitch.
