Powder coated bow rails

Post by S.A.M. »

Bueller...Bueller! Anybody...Anybody!

My '90 10 meter has powder coated bow rails, helms wheel, grab rails and the stern bumper rack. I assume that this was a factory standard in '90 because I've seen pictures of other '90 models with it.

There are rust stains begining to show at the deck mounts and rail joints. I can't believe that Trojan used anything other than stainless even though they powder coated the rails. This boat was in Tennessee until I purchased it in October '08 and had it shipped here. That's probably why no stains before.

Anyone have any insight or knowledge on this?

Stainless steel will rust under certain conditions where air cannot get to the metal or if a weld has not been finished properly. You can get the rust off easily using stainless polish or naval jelly, then just touch up the paint. You can check the railings using a magnet. Some cheaper grades of stainless are slightly magnetic though.
