V-Drive oil change

Post by gofish103 »

Couple questions regarding changing the oil in the V-Drives.

I've read that to change the oil in the transmissions, that you have to disconnect the return line from the oil cooler to drain the oil and then use a pump to remove the remainder in the unit. But I have also read that there is a drain plug. I couldnt find the drain plug.

What kind of oil to use. the tag on the tranny says to us automatic transmission fluid. But Ive read that some use regular oil (15-40). Any comments?

More than likely I'll stick with ATF.

If its a Velet drive stick with AFT. motor oil is ok if you do not ever go over 3000 rpm I asume the v drive is part of the trans and not a remote unit ?

I have never seen a V-drive as part of the trans. Make sure you are not talking 2 seperate units and not confusing the two. ie; a velvet drive coupled to a walter V drive. Two very differant things. (and lubricants)

Jimbo many v-drives are part of the Trans. Some builders use them some like the remote units Like walter . Velet drive makes v-drive trans as well as ZF and parigon , I am sure of others .

In very many cases it is part of the trans . in others it is a separate unit
The links I posted are on the ones that are part of the trans .

can you post a photo ?

I looked at one F28 on the net it had a the V-drive trans together it was a pragon trans/vdrive Not sure what lub it takes the should be a name tag some where but with a photo I should be able to tell what you have . If I can't I am sure someone can .

prowlerfish,
I dont have a picture on hand, but when I get back from vacation I send you a pic. but the transmission looks like the one in the first link you posted. I did look at the tag on top of the tranny, I didnt pay any attention to the model. but I did see that is recommended ATF. Im sure the oil hasnt been changed in awhile.
