Have to change oil pan on a 318--can it be done without taking motor completely out--the boat is a f-32

You will need to raise the engine. I used an "A" frame to lift the 440 in my F36. Once the engine and trans was lifted, I put 2 - 4 x 4's across the hatch opening and lowered the engine onto the mounts on the 4 x 4's. I was then able to get under the engine to remove the pan.

The oil pans on my 351's are 8 quart. Try calling Cook Engine Inc. Portland Or. 503-289-8466. They can answer any marine engine question you may have.

Just curious, I have a 318 in my F25... why do you have to change it, and what should I be looking for on mine? I am a newbie to Trojan ownership.

Thanks

They will work. However, most marine oil pans are cast aluminum, keeps them from rusting and that some manufacturers call for an extra qt. or so in the marine application, external coolers, remote filters, etc.

You can use a steel pan. I have one on my starboard engine.

wowzer52,

What hp 351's do you have 233 or 255hp?

What kind of cruising speed do you get?

There is another difference between an automotive oil pan and a marine pan. Because the marine engine sits at an angle the oil pans shape is different. The bottom of the pan is made at an angle so the oil doesn't pool at the back of the pan. As mentioned, it also has a larger capacity.

I have to replace the pans because thisboat was abandoned by its previous owner and water got in the oilpans and they cracked in the winter. a shame as she is a goregous boatbut now they areboth getting rebuilt, this shouldn`t be a problem for most owners

Willie, I have 233 hp (2bbl) and cruise just on a plane at 17 knots at 3200 rpm. with full tanks and use 15 gph.
8kts=1600rpm=7gph again with full tanks.
6kts=1200rpm=3.5 gph
